Can companies improve their financial performance and competitive situation through corporate philanthropy (CP) as an innovative business strategy? With my VU colleagues Dick de Gilder and Theo Schuyt and my colleague Sarah Borgloh at the Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim we will answer this question in a new research project.
Both the quantitative (monetary) and the qualitative dimension of CP activities such as giving or sponsoring will be taken into account. Advanced econometric tools (such as propensity score matching approaches) will be combined with the insights from qualitative interviews and thus result in a full analytical picture. The guiding research question is addressed using data from corporations in Germany and the Netherlands.
The research is planned from April 2011 to September 2012. The research is funded by the Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies (SEEK) programme.
